Red Dog Alebrije
  • Red Dog Alebrije

Despite popular beliefs, Alebrijes is a fairly recent art style developed by Pedro Linares. In 1936 he had become sick and hallucinated these wonderful creatures. He was a paper mache artist, so that is the traditional form of "Alebrijes". Now, you can find many in Oaxaca on wooden figures.

I am very excited to have broadened the mediums of Alebrijes. The clay I use is ethically sourced from the Flint Hills, which is a gorgeous tall grass prairie in Kansas. How beautiful is it to know that the makeup of these Alebrijes come from a protected and loved ecosystem that houses so many exquisite species, diversity, and nature?

The foundation of this art form resides with me, as I too hallucinate wonderful creatures due to my neurological disorder. I see these creatures as mystical, and belonging to the realm of dreams, the deceased, and other non-wordly dimensions. Alebrijes, to me, represent creativity and spirituality.

What do they mean to you?
